Yes, software can and likely will be developed with AI for structural engineering in the future. AI and machine learning technologies have already begun to make their mark in various engineering disciplines, including structural engineering. This software could potentially automate many repetitive and complex tasks, ranging from analyzing and designing structural systems to predicting potential failures and providing optimal solutions for challenging design issues. For example, AI could be used to perform complex calculations, simulate different scenarios, and analyze vast amounts of data much faster than a human could, leading to improvements in efficiency and accuracy. Moreover, AI-powered software could offer predictive analytics and risk assessment, thereby ensuring safer and more efficient structures.

To harness the potential of AI in structural engineering software development, a combination of skills would be needed. First and foremost, a strong foundation in structural engineering principles is critical to understand the context and application of AI. This includes knowledge of structural dynamics, materials, and analysis techniques. Secondly, proficiency in programming and algorithms is a must, especially in languages typically used in AI and machine learning like Python or R. Understanding data structures, databases, and cloud computing will also be beneficial as these are often involved in AI applications. Furthermore, knowledge of machine learning concepts and algorithms is essential. This includes understanding how to build, train, and evaluate models, as well as knowledge of different types of learning such as supervised, unsupervised, and reinforcement learning. Finally, given the ethical implications of AI, having knowledge in AI ethics and guidelines could also be important.
