A New Taxation System for Electric Vehicle Owners?
Electric vehicles are the wave of the future, and if you’re lucky enough to own one, then you’re already ahead of the game.
But since electric vehicles don’t require gas, should their owners pay a fee in place of the gas tax? It’s an interesting question that has been debated among enthusiasts and policymakers alike. Read on to get a better idea of why electric vehicle owners may (or may not) need to pay up.
The Pros of Paying a Fee for EV Owners
The primary argument in favor of charging electric vehicle owners a fee is that it will help offset some of the costs associated with maintaining roads, bridges, and other transportation infrastructure across the country.
Gas taxes are one way to pay for this type of upkeep, but since electric vehicles don’t use gas they don’t contribute anything towards paying for such maintenance. As such, many people argue that EV owners should be paying a fee to make up for this lack of contribution.
The idea behind charging an EV fee is that it would be based on how much electricity is used by each vehicle and would be calculated on an annual basis.
